On September 17, Douyin officially launched a dedicated reporting channel for "voice impersonation" and upgraded related rights protection mechanisms, fully responding to new rights protection demands triggered by the popularization of AI generation technology.
As the barriers to AI generation and voice cloning have decreased, incidents of impersonating celebrities' and voice actors' voices have become frequent; according to Douyin's platform data, the number of reports related to voice infringement has doubled compared to the same period last month, and voice rights protection has become a key governance issue in the implementation of generative AI applications.
To address this issue, Douyin's latest upgrade added a dedicated "voice impersonation" channel under the "Rights Infringement" category, and introduced a verifiable evidence submission mechanism and a two-way appeal process, achieving a complete closed-loop from entry creation, evidence verification to final determination, significantly enhancing the transparency of rights protection. Technologically and in terms of governance, Douyin continues to optimize voiceprint recognition and verification capabilities, building a comprehensive personality rights protection system covering both image and voice.
Previous data showed that during a special campaign in April 2026, Douyin had already removed more than 538,000 AI infringement videos throughout the year, including 85,000 AI image and voice infringement videos. According to Article 1023 of the Civil Code, voice rights are clearly protected by law, similar to image rights, and the first AI voice infringement case in China has resulted in a compensation of 250,000 yuan.
Douyin's recent enhancement in voice rights governance marks that leading short video and content platforms have expanded their control over deep synthesis content from traditional copyright management to refined protection of biometric features and personal rights, providing a new model for platform governance and content compliance in the era of generative AI.
