Oracle Corporation unexpectedly laid off approximately 20,000 to 30,000 employees via email on March 31, shocking many. The severance package offered by the company was not generous. As a condition of signing a release of claims agreement, employees received four weeks of salary in the first year, plus an additional week for each year of service, with a maximum of 26 weeks. In addition, the company paid for one month of COBRA health insurance premiums. However, many employees found that their unvested restricted stock units (RSUs) would be forfeited, significantly reducing their overall compensation.
Notably, some employees were classified as remote workers by Oracle during the layoff, which prevented them from receiving protections under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN Act). According to this law, companies conducting mass layoffs must notify employees two months in advance. By classifying employees as remote workers, Oracle managed to bypass this requirement.
After the layoff, a small group of employees attempted to negotiate collectively, with at least 90 signing a public petition demanding Oracle improve the severance package. However, Oracle did not respond positively, and employees said the company took a firm stance, unwilling to engage in any negotiations.
Comparing the severance packages offered by other major tech companies, many employees expressed dissatisfaction. For example, Meta offered a starting package of 16 weeks of base pay, plus two weeks of compensation per year, while Microsoft and Cloudflare also provided significantly better packages than Oracle. Despite this, Oracle has made no comment on the incident, highlighting the vulnerability of tech employees facing layoffs in a tough economic climate.
