2026April 9, Tencent released its 2025 ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) report. With the drive of AI, Tencent achieved high-quality growth and improved internal governance, and its ESG performance has been widely recognized. The report details Tencent's initiatives and progress in multiple ESG areas, reflecting the practice of Tencent's values of "technology for good" in technology, users, society, and the environment. The report mentions that the international rating agency MSCI upgraded Tencent's ESG rating from BBB to A, and content such as carbon neutrality, AI safety governance, protection of minors, and social value innovation has also attracted attention.
Green electricity ratio significantly increased, steadily advancing carbon neutrality
In terms of environmental protection, Tencent is steadily advancing its 2030 carbon neutrality goal. Despite the increased AI energy consumption in 2025, Tencent maintained its carbon reduction progress, thanks to measures such as green power transition, energy efficiency improvement, and reducing supply chain carbon emissions. For example, the green electricity ratio of Tencent's own data centers has risen from 49.8% in 2024 to 82.9%, with a target of reaching 100% by 2026.
At the same time, Tencent is helping society achieve a low-carbon transformation. The "Carbon Search Plan" continues to incubate innovative low-carbon technologies, expanding the scope of the second phase to include global applications, receiving over 600 applications from more than 54 countries and regions. The selected teams will receive funding support to carry out technical pilot projects.
In terms of biodiversity conservation, Shenzhen Tencent Binhai Building completed an ecological-friendly renovation, creating a coexistence garden that provides food, water, and shelter for urban species. Tencent shares its experience to support partners in establishing five coexistence gardens in Shenzhen, promoting urban biodiversity conservation. Additionally, AI technology is used in species identification to help conservation staff improve data collection efficiency and accuracy. The public can participate in species observation in cities through the "Wild Friends" mini program, which relies on Tencent's HuanYuan large model to quickly identify species information in uploaded photos.
Release of the "Tencent Responsible AI Principles", improving AI safety governance
AI technology is profoundly reshaping industries and society, and the resulting security issues have become a focus for the whole society and industry. Upholding the mission of "user-centric, technology for good," Tencent released the "Tencent Responsible AI Principles" in the report, covering five dimensions: value guidance, safety capability building, risk response mechanisms, legal compliance assurance, and industry standard co-creation. All of Tencent's HuanYuan large model, AI product matrix, and business scenarios will explore responsible innovation practices under these principles.
Tencent has long emphasized AI safety. In 2018, it proposed related governance principles and implemented AI safety governance in various aspects, such as independently developing an AI application privacy protection system, independently developing AIGC detection and authentication technology, and conducting large-scale AI safety drills multiple times. International authoritative research institution Gartner has also rated Tencent Cloud as a representative Chinese vendor in the "AI Security Testing" field. In response to the rapid development of AI agents like "Lobster," Tencent has launched the AI Agent Safety Center, iOA, and Lobster Manager, helping enterprises and individuals safely and smoothly use "Lobster," supporting safe governance of AI technology in the industry.
Tencent believes that AI development brings both opportunities and challenges. Embracing technological innovation responsibly, continuously improving the AI governance system, and actively accepting feedback and supervision are necessary to ensure that AI innovation proceeds steadily and serves human well-being.
Protecting the rights of minors, gaining user trust
While emphasizing technical safety, Tencent is committed to providing users with reliable services, especially implementing a series of measures for the protection of minors. Protecting minors online requires not only preventing harm but also assisting in the digital development of teenagers. Tencent's minor protection system integrates product capabilities and quality content, working together with social forces to protect the safety of minors' online lives and promote their all-round growth, jointly building a digital world that is "parents' trust and children's favorite."
On one hand, the principle of "best interest of minors" is integrated into design, algorithms, and operations, creating safe, interesting, and valuable digital products. In the gaming business, minors can only log in during 20:00 to 21:00 on Fridays, weekends, and statutory holidays. Parents can also bind their children's game accounts through the Tencent Growth Guardianship mini program to manage the game time and spending behavior of minors. At the same time, the minor mode running on platforms such as WeChat, QQ, Tencent Video, and QQ Music allows children to access age-appropriate content. Additionally, Tencent Video extends the age-appropriate content recommendation and parental control functions to the TV end.
On the other hand, Tencent collaborates with multiple parties to enhance minors' online literacy. WeChat Video Account offers online courses on topics such as self-protection for minors; the Tencent Minor Parent Service Platform mini program provides parents with educational courses, expert consultations, and AI Q&A on minors' online security, with over 44 million users now accessing family education resources and support. Meanwhile, the Tencent Protection Station and Tencent Customer Service Minor Protection Camps conduct offline activities in schools, communities, and rural areas, providing comprehensive online protection solutions for teenagers and parents.

Driving sustainable social value innovation with digital technology
The report explains how Tencent uses digital technology and platform capabilities to explore innovative solutions to social issues. In 2025, during the 11th consecutive year of the Jiujiu Public Welfare Festival, Tencent advocated integrating charity into daily life, attracting public participation in over 530 million public welfare activities through social networks, digital tools, and offline partners. These activities include donations, steps, books, blood donation, and volunteer services. As of the end of last year, the Tencent Public Welfare Platform had accumulated over 1.9 billion users who donated, with 136,000 fundraising projects and over 37.1 billion yuan raised. Digital platforms and capabilities not only improved the transparency and operational efficiency of public welfare organizations, enhanced trust among stakeholders, but also helped public welfare projects reach a broader audience.
Tencent continues to invest in promoting basic scientific research, cultural heritage, and enhancing social emergency response capabilities. The Science Exploration Prize and the New Foundation Researcher Program have funded more than 430 outstanding scientists so far. For cultural heritage such as the Dunhuang Mogao Caves, Xixia Tombs, and oracle bone inscriptions, Tencent uses AI, 3D modeling, and game engines to assist in their protection and inheritance. The National Earthquake Early Warning Mini Program was launched on WeChat first, then on QQ last year, with over 35 million users now enabling early warnings.
