Apple has recently announced that it will introduce agent-based programming features into its flagship development tool, Xcode, marking Apple's official entry into the hottest tech trend in Silicon Valley. Through agent-driven programming technology, programmers can use artificial intelligence software to autonomously write code, significantly improving development efficiency.
In a demonstration video released on Tuesday, an Apple representative said: "Now, Xcode is able to work with programming agents to help users handle complex multi-step programming tasks." This update is not only an extension of the features added to Xcode last summer, but will also be deeply integrated with agents such as OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude, further driving a transformation in programming methods.
The new agent features can not only help programmers build and test projects, but also access Apple's official documentation and fix issues in programs. Currently, independent developers and enterprises are beginning to try this new approach called "ambient programming," which greatly improves development efficiency by issuing instructions to AI and reviewing the generated code.
Although Apple's previous AI suite, Apple Intelligence, experienced delays in its launch and changes in management, the intelligent programming feature is quickly gaining popularity within the Apple developer community. To use this new feature, users need to bind their OpenAI or Anthropic account to Xcode via an API key. Apple stated that this feature uses open standards, allowing programmers to connect other compatible agents and AI tools besides the built-in agent, greatly expanding development possibilities.
Xcode, Apple's integrated development environment for developers, is used for the development of almost all iPhone applications. The beta version of the latest Xcode 26.3 has already been made available to registered developers and is expected to be officially launched in the Apple App Store soon. At the same time, OpenAI also launched a Codex intelligent programming app designed specifically for Apple computers on Monday, further strengthening Apple's position in the field of intelligent programming.
