OpenAI recently announced that it will remove the text chat restrictions for all users of ChatGPT, further expanding the usage scope of the AI assistant. Currently, the weekly user count of ChatGPT has exceeded 1 billion, and the new model upgrade will be supported by the new GPT-5.6 series.

The GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for Free and Go users, replacing the previous GPT-5.5. In the future, users will also get a new "Think" button, which allows them to actively choose a higher reasoning ability mode for handling more complex problems. OpenAI stated that capabilities such as file processing, image input, voice functions, and image generation will still maintain independent quota limits.

For Plus and Pro users, OpenAI also launched an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model. This model is mainly aimed at high-frequency and fast tasks, including daily Q&A, web search, suggestions, planning, writing, and decision support. The official said that it can provide more concise and reliable answers. It should be noted that the GPT-5.6 Sol version used in Codex and Work products has not been adjusted this time.

In addition, Plus and Pro users will also get a "thinking level" slider function, which allows them to adjust the amount of computing power the model invests according to the complexity of the task and the required reasoning steps, to balance response speed and answer depth.

According to internal test data released by OpenAI, compared with GPT-5.5-Instant, the fact error rate of GPT-5.6 Luna has decreased by 62%, and the fact error rate of GPT-5.6 Sol has decreased by 68%. Currently, GPT-5.6 Sol has been opened to Plus and Pro users. The related updates for Free and Go users will be rolled out this week, and it is expected that starting next week, all users can experience unlimited text chatting and the new "Think" feature.

This upgrade further demonstrates OpenAI's direction of pushing AI assistants from simple Q&A tools toward long-term, high-frequency intelligent interaction platforms. As the user base continues to expand, the reliability of models, reasoning capabilities, and optimization of usage quotas have become important factors in the competition of AI products.
