OpenAI released a case study, where NTT DATA Group, a Japanese IT service giant, shortened a complex system fault analysis that originally required five senior engineers to spend three days to 30 minutes by deploying the Codex agent. Codex is now widely used by about 9,000 employees at NTT DATA, covering both technical and non-technical positions, becoming a benchmark case for enterprise-level AI agent applications.

From ChatGPT Enterprise to Codex: First Develop Habits, Then Introduce Agents

After NTT DATA formed a global strategic partnership with OpenAI in May 2025, it deployed ChatGPT Enterprise across the company and established an internal OpenAI Excellence Center to promote AI implementation. Internal surveys showed that over 96% of employees were satisfied with ChatGPT Enterprise, and over 95% felt their productivity had improved. This phase helped employees develop daily habits of using AI for research, writing, and content creation, laying the foundation for the introduction of Codex.

Codex's capabilities far exceed traditional programming assistants, as it can independently complete tasks such as investigation, execution, testing, and modification. According to Hiroaki Sato from NTT DATA's AI technology department, Codex changed the company's perception of AI, and the idea that "AI can lead work completion" has had an impact comparable to the arrival of ChatGPT. Shoji Shono, head of the Global AI Office, emphasized that Codex is not only helping developers write code faster, but also opening up a new way of working for every employee.

Expanding from Engineers to Non-Technical Staff, with Security Governance Keeping Pace

Through the "Customer Zero" strategy, NTT DATA treated itself as the first customer for AI applications, encouraging employees to test Codex in their daily work. Non-technical staff have started using Codex to extract transportation costs from credit card statements and fill out travel reimbursement forms, analyze Excel data to generate reports, and batch organize files. Many tasks that previously required engineer support can now be completed independently.

To ensure safe usage, the Excellence Center developed detailed security guidelines, clearly defining the scope of data use, system connection permissions, sandbox mode configuration, automation levels, and manual review requirements. After releasing the usage guide and conducting hands-on training, the weekly active Codex user base increased by 1.4 times. NTT DATA's vision is to amplify the knowledge and professional skills of each employee through its "AI-Driven Enterprise" strategy, and to promote the successful internal experience to customers and society.
