According to the latest exposed code information, Google is preparing to introduce the Gemini AI assistant for the Apple CarPlay version of Google Maps, which means a qualitative leap in the intelligent experience of in-car navigation.

Currently, Gemini is already functioning within the Google Maps app on iPhones, allowing users to use the "Ask Maps" feature to leverage AI to solve complex real-world questions about destinations or surrounding environments. However, this feature has been missing in the previous CarPlay environment. The latest development indicates that once users agree to the updated terms of service on their phones, they can unlock support for Gemini in the in-vehicle system, thereby obtaining more organized navigation guidance and detailed location information.

This feature would not have been possible without Apple's openness at the system level. Starting with iOS 26.4, Apple has allowed third-party voice conversation apps to integrate more deeply with CarPlay. This has paved the way for Google to bring Gemini into the in-vehicle ecosystem.

In practical use, drivers will no longer be limited to traditional voice commands. With Gemini, users can interact in a conversational manner, such as asking for specific details about a destination or seeking travel advice after starting navigation. Although this feature has not yet been officially launched, the relevant code framework is already built into the app, indicating that it will be rolled out to users worldwide after final testing.

With the addition of Gemini, the lineup of AI assistants in CarPlay is growing rapidly. Previously, mainstream AI services such as ChatGPT, Grok, and Perplexity have successively joined this ecosystem. For car owners, this is not only an upgrade of navigation tools but also marks the transformation of in-vehicle systems from a simple "toolbox" to a "smart co-pilot" with deep understanding capabilities.
