On November 3, OpenAI published a blog post unveiling new progress in AI-assisted physical product R&D and showcasing the capabilities of GPT-6 Astra in collaborative design across mechanics, electronics, and software.
According to the post, two team members used their spare time and, in less than a week, relied on Astra to complete the design of a test device that can interact with Codex—the model handled everything in one go, from appearance and enclosure structure to electronic component selection, circuit board layout, and firmware generation, folding work that would normally require collaboration among multiple parties into a single chat window. A contract manufacturer then produced a small batch of prototypes in less than a month, compressing the cycle from a sketch to a playable real device to an astonishingly short time.

From drawing to mass production still requires crossing thresholds; Mazda becomes a new partner
However, the path from design to manufacturing is not smooth sailing. OpenAI admits that the model did not always account for production constraints, dimensional tolerances, and assembly details, and that multiple rounds of review and iteration are still needed before production. Physical products are unlike pure software; tolerances and production-line constraints are unavoidable hard nuts to crack. At present, AI can only serve as an accelerator, not take full control.
Automobiles have become the next proving ground for AI collaborative design. OpenAI is working with Mazda's aerodynamics and crash safety engineers, using airflow and structural simulations to explore new vehicle styling and find better solutions among performance, cost, and appearance; it has also expanded its cooperation with the Chip Ganassi Racing team, attempting to convert 3D scan data of parts into editable CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings, specifically tackling the long-standing headache of missing original design files. As AI reaches out to grasp a screwdriver, the wall between software and hardware is quietly being pushed down.
