Recently, OpenAI has been advancing its plan to integrate the ChatGPT desktop app. According to notices received by users, the old ChatGPT Classic app will officially stop service on January 30, 2027. Users' complete chat histories will be migrated to the new app, and they will still be able to access previous conversations.

Earlier this year, OpenAI launched a new desktop app that integrates ChatGPT, Work, and Codex, and renamed the original app ChatGPT Classic. In its early days, the new app sparked user controversy because it used Electron instead of a native macOS app, and due to issues such as a complex interface and unclear feature entry points. OpenAI then adjusted the interaction design, restoring the "Chat" and "Work" toggle at the top and improving how users switch between ChatGPT and Codex.

At the same time, OpenAI plans to begin small-scale testing in the coming weeks, integrating ChatGPT's conversational capabilities with Work's advanced task execution abilities into a single interface. Users will then be able to complete the entire process from ideation to execution within one platform, including importing files, using plugins, creating websites, making presentations, and performing other web tasks, while also being able to review and guide the AI's work. Codex will continue to run independently in the desktop app.

In addition, OpenAI also plans to introduce a shared usage quota for ChatGPT and Codex, replacing the previous separate quota mechanisms. Quota consumption will change dynamically based on the model and task complexity. Advanced models and complex tasks will consume more quota, while unlimited instant usage included in the plan will not count against the quota. This move means OpenAI is further pushing the desktop experience to transform from a chat tool into an integrated AI task execution platform.
