On September 24th, during the Meta Connect event this morning, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a new device called Muse Charm. This is a small, always-on handheld device based on Meta AI assistant Muse, similar to 90s-era electronic pets, designed for people who don't wear Meta smart glasses, providing a way for users to quickly interact with Muse without wearing glasses. Meta said that Muse Charm will be available before the December holidays, with specific prices and more details to be announced later.
About a 2-inch screen, built-in 5G, can be attached to a backpack
According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Muse Charm was born in Meta's new design lab, led by former Apple interface design head Alan Dye and his "super intelligent AI team." The device features an approximately 2-inch OLED display, runs a new operating system; it has a built-in 5G modem, allowing access to Muse even without Wi-Fi, and includes a fingerprint sensor for unlocking, but cannot make calls or video calls, and has some common functions of smartphones.
After turning on, a virtual Muse appearance appears in the center of the screen, and users can customize its appearance, clothing, voice, and other attributes. It can be worn on a wristband, placed in a pocket, or hung on a bag or keychain with a lanyard; the semi-transparent housing allows seeing the internal circuitry through the back and sides. Similar to an electronic pet, two users with Muse Charm can recognize and interact with each other when the devices are close. The device has cameras on both front and back, capable of taking photos and videos—mainly to provide visual information for Muse to analyze and assist with AI operations, also supports viewing the captured content, and has speakers, microphones, and a USB-C charging port.
Price close to smartwatches, Zuckerberg urges early launch
Meta also announced some new features of Muse, including video calls with customizable avatars in real time; the Muse agent also has its own email address for completing tasks and communicating with users. According to insiders, the company originally planned to release the device in 2027, but Zuckerberg urged the team to launch it in 2026 and have it on the market by year-end; its price will be close to that of a smartwatch, although specific details about mobile operator access have not been finalized by Meta.
