According to sources, SpaceX's artificial intelligence division, SpaceXAI, is conducting informal internal discussions about acquiring customer and operational data from struggling or already defunct startups to train AI models such as Grok.
The intent is straightforward: to obtain high-quality external datasets to enhance model performance. More importantly, it signals a shift—this company is no longer solely reliant on data from Elon Musk's social media platform X and its internal "AI mentor" team, but is seeking more diverse data sources for Grok. Once the data from its own ecosystem is exhausted, real-world operational data from outside becomes the new scarce fuel.
This approach is not new. Google previously sought to acquire operational data from Spirit Airlines for AI training, following a similar logic—treating a company's accumulated first-hand operational data as model feedstock. However, the related negotiations are still in early stages, and it is uncertain whether an agreement will be reached. SpaceX has not commented on the matter.
