The arms race in the field of artificial intelligence is experiencing a new level of frenzied explosion. According to media reports, the AI unicorn Anthropic has signed contracts worth a staggering $517 billion in computing power within just eleven months. Since October 2025, the company has further ramped up its investments, locking in at least 14.8 gigawatts (GW) of massive computing capacity on top of its existing 1 to 2 gigawatts, and officially launched its grand plan to build its own data centers.

Strategic Rivalry Behind the Aggressive Expansion

Although the total capacity plan of 14.8 gigawatts may still fall short of OpenAI's ambitious goal of reaching 30 gigawatts by 2030, many of Anthropic's computing power contracts have terms that far exceed the 2030 milestone, making direct comparisons between the two leading companies' roadmaps quite complex.

Interestingly, this surge of capital and computing power is also accompanied by diverging views among industry leaders regarding risks. At the beginning of 2026, Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei publicly warned the industry not to invest too quickly, stating that competitors "do not truly understand the risks they are taking." However, as multiple rounds of intensive layout have been implemented, Anthropic has now become the one rushing to catch up in the arms race. Meanwhile, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman has recently frequently urged the industry to remain cautious and issued severe warnings about the "unsustainable foolish behavior" of emerging cloud service providers. In his view, the rapid technological advancements could ultimately turn today's expensive projects into a bad bet.

The Vast Commitments and the Huge Gap with Revenue Scale

Facing commitments of hundreds of billions of dollars in computing power expenditures, both companies currently face the reality of being unable to fully cover these costs with their existing revenue. According to the latest financial data published by Bloomberg, Anthropic's annualized revenue has already exceeded $65 billion, while OpenAI's annualized revenue through July reached over $40 billion. Although both companies have shown strong performance in monetizing their offerings, the high-stakes battle of spending remains full of high unknowns and financial challenges in front of the vast and continuously expanding infrastructure investment.
