Huang Renxun Congratulates OpenAI on the Release of Astra: AGI Has Already Arrived, Scholars Immediately Pour Cold Water

On September 7, Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, posted on the X platform, congratulating OpenAI on the release of its latest large model Astra and putting forward a provocative view: AGI has arrived.

Huang stated, "OpenAI released ChatGPT, then o1, and now Astra in just four years. AGI has arrived. Congratulations to the OpenAI team." General Artificial Intelligence (AGI) refers to an artificial intelligence that has the same level of intelligence as humans or exceeds that of ordinary humans, capable of exhibiting all intelligent behaviors that a normal human possesses.

OpenAI Calls Astra "the Smartest and Most Human Values-Aligned Model"

OpenAI officially launched Astra this Thursday, calling it the world's "smartest and most human values-aligned model," and believes the model can complete the most challenging professional tasks with "unparalleled speed, accuracy, and judgment." Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president, later said during a conference call, "Welcome to the AGI era."

AI researcher and critical scholar Gary Marcus, however, believes Huang's judgment is premature. He stated that Huang provided neither a scientific definition nor any evidence, and in his view, NVIDIA simply declared unilaterally, taking over an issue that should belong to science. Marcus also attached his 10 AGI definition criteria and pointed out that Astra currently meets only one or two of them.

On the other hand, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently at a podcast event, believed that AGI is at best a term with a very vague definition, and even stated that AGI might just be an "irrelevant marketing term."
