Handing over a repetitive task once and then never worrying about it again—that's probably everyone's dream of being lazy. xAI has made it a reality. Grok has officially launched the Automations (Automation Tasks) feature: you just need to describe your work, choose when it should run, and let Grok handle the rest. Whether it's doing research quietly before you wake up or flagging an important email the moment it arrives, it will keep an eye on things for you. This feature is now available on grok.com as well as the Grok app on iOS and Android.
Creating an automation task is as simple as sending a chat message. You describe your needs in a way you usually would in a conversation, attach files to add context, connect tools and skills, and select a running mode. Give it a name, save it, and from then on, every run is a new request—same instructions, but always the latest data. It doesn't just replay what you've said before; it uses the same task book each time to fetch the freshest information available.
As for when it runs, Grok offers two options. One is based on a schedule: it can be set to run once, or daily, only on weekdays, weekly, monthly, or yearly, at a specific time in your time zone. For example, a morning briefing sent before 8 a.m., or a reminder to pay rent on the first of each month. The other is triggered by email—it watches your inbox, and as soon as an email meets the filters you set (sender, recipient, or subject), the task starts immediately and uses that email as context, allowing Grok to respond directly to the real message. You can even mention a specific tool in your instructions: inputting @ followed by a connector, and Grok will automatically use it every time it runs. Of course, you can also manually trigger it immediately, which is very convenient when you want to test your task right after setting it up.

Each trigger isn't just a cold output of results. When an automation task starts, Grok actually begins a real conversation, completes the work, and saves the results in the run history. You can open any run, read through the full conversation thread, or even continue the conversation from where Grok left off. As for how it reports back to you, the choice is entirely yours—email, app notifications, both, or neither, and you can check it yourself later. It's all up to you.

You can also create tasks more casually. You can directly create an automation task in a chat, for example, telling Grok "every morning, help me check the news and mark any articles related to pricing," and it will set up this process for you. The Automations page also has ready-made recommended templates to get you started, and any task can be paused, resumed, edited, or deleted at any time, keeping the sense of control firmly in your hands.
You can now create your first automation task at grok.com/automations. Scheduled tasks are available to everyone, while the email-triggered function is included in the SuperGrok subscription. When AI starts learning to check the time on its own, monitor emails, and start working, perhaps the only thing humans need to do is to clearly express their ideas.
