The highly anticipated open-source AI assistant project, OpenClaw, has recently received a major update and is now officially available on iPhone and iPad. The launch of this native iOS application marks a more smooth and stable user experience for those using self-hosted AI agents on mobile devices.

Previously, users often relied on third-party communication tools like Telegram or WhatsApp as a temporary solution to access OpenClaw on their phones. However, the introduction of this new app completely replaces that cumbersome approach, offering a unified and secure native connection method for iOS devices.

Building a Mobile AI Gateway

OpenClaw itself is a self-hosted AI agent tool, typically deployed and run on personal computers such as Macs or PCs. Users can freely connect API keys from various mainstream AI services like Claude, OpenAI, and Gemini to their gateway and deeply associate them with local data.

By pairing with the gateway running on the computer, the new iOS app allows AI models to securely access various daily resources on the phone. Whether it's direct text chatting, using voice conversation mode, or approving automated operation requests from the gateway, users can easily perform these tasks on their phones.

Considerations for Permissions and Security

To enable more advanced workflows, the app can call device capabilities like the camera, location, photos, and calendar, provided the user grants permission. Additionally, it supports system-level push wake-up and node status updates, making it convenient for advanced users to monitor and trigger automated tasks anytime.

However, relevant security experts have also warned that due to the tool's high dependency on extensive system permissions and its susceptibility to prompt injection attacks, careful configuration of security policies is still necessary when deploying it. It is worth noting that the project was initially named "Clawdbot" because it was based on Claude, but it was officially renamed OpenClaw after the company raised objections over the name.
