The interaction revolution in smart cars is pushing traditional smartphone mirroring solutions to the edge of history. Waseem Bensaid, the software chief of American electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian, recently made a surprising statement in an interview, clearly indicating that with the accelerated advancement of artificial intelligence technology, it has become completely "outdated" to discuss whether Apple CarPlay should be integrated into vehicles.

AI Agents Take Over In-Car Interaction
According to Bensaid, the automotive industry is undergoing a profound shift from "software-defined" to "AI-defined." In the future, as AI agents are increasingly implemented, the way drivers and passengers interact will undergo a revolutionary change. It will no longer be limited to searching for and opening specific applications on the screen, but rather the system will directly understand user intent and perform complex tasks. This deep integration of AI within the vehicle will make simple screen mirroring solutions obsolete.
Self-Developed Integrated Systems Are More Popular
Rivian emphasized that screen mirroring solutions like CarPlay take over "every pixel" in the car, which completely contradicts the company's vision for user interaction. The company prefers to maintain independence in control of the central console, offering users a comprehensive native service that includes navigation, vehicle control, entertainment, and an AI assistant. Recent internal survey data also supports the correctness of this approach: Five years ago, more than 70% of users strongly requested support for CarPlay, but this number has now significantly dropped to less than 25%.
