Meta announced to its internal employees on May 18 local time a memo revealing the major layoffs and organizational restructuring plan that will be implemented this week, marking the company's deepening shift toward an AI strategy.

According to the memo, Meta will officially lay off 10% of its global workforce on May 20 local time, and is expected to carry out larger-scale deep cuts later this year. In addition to direct layoffs, Meta will also implement a disruptive flat management structure by significantly reducing managerial positions. Janelle Gale, Meta's Chief Human Resources Officer, stated that many departments introduced "AI-native design principles" when designing the new structure. The company will operate through more streamlined, autonomous small teams in the future to achieve higher response speed.

In this AI-driven restructuring, Meta also plans to transfer up to 7,000 employees to new projects related to AI workflows, with some job transfers already taking place gradually. Combined with layoffs and job transfers, this round of restructuring will directly affect about 20% of Meta's workforce, while the company has simultaneously closed another 6,000 open positions.

Amid the current competition among global tech giants for general artificial intelligence (AGI), Meta's aggressive structural adjustments reflect that Silicon Valley companies are accelerating the transformation from the "mobile internet era" to the "AI era," redefining productivity paradigms. Its initiatives to reshape organizational boundaries based on AI-native principles may trigger a new wave of industry imitation regarding micro-efficient teams and AI workflow reorganization.
