SpaceX, the company founded by Elon Musk, and artificial intelligence firm xAI have merged and rebranded as SpaceXAI, but are now facing a severe talent crisis. According to a recent industry survey, more than 50 top researchers and engineers have left the company since February this year.

The exodus has affected multiple core technical teams within the company, including leaders of the programming assistant, world model, and Grok voice interaction departments. This change has raised significant concerns about the future technological sustainability of SpaceXAI.

Competitors are aggressively poaching talent, and the pre-training team is nearly empty

Currently, competitors such as Meta and the emerging Thinking Machines Lab are actively attracting these departing talents. According to statistics, nearly 20 core employees have joined these two companies, causing a sharp reduction in the size of SpaceXAI's pre-training team.

Pre-training is the foundation for developing top AI models, and the departure of key leaders has dampened internal morale. Many industry observers are beginning to question whether SpaceXAI still has the capability to maintain its industry leadership after losing these key forces.

Extreme overtime culture is hindering progress, and the temptation of stock options is huge

One of the reasons for the large-scale employee departures is the high-pressure work culture promoted by Musk, with unrealistic development deadlines leaving developers overwhelmed. Some engineers have admitted that the excessive pressure even forced teams to take some compromises during model training.

Additionally, with reports that SpaceX is about to go public, the value of company equity has soared. Many employees have chosen to exercise their options and cash out, believing that there is no need to stay in a high-pressure and uncertain environment once financial returns have been achieved.
