Over the past year, Amazon Ring has faced a surge in customer service call volume. After evaluating more than 40 AI voice providers, it ultimately chose the startup Vapi to handle all its incoming calls. This choice not only improved Ring's customer service experience but also secured Vapi $50 million in Series B funding, with a valuation of $5 billion.
Vapi's CEO Jordan Dearsley said that Ring chose them because Vapi's platform allows Ring's engineers to have detailed control over AI agent behavior during real-time interactions with customers. Jason Mitura, Vice President of Software Development at Amazon Ring, also stated that after implementing Vapi's solution, customer satisfaction saw a significant improvement, and Ring's team could adjust the AI agent experience without relying on engineers.
Vapi was founded in 2023 with the initial goal of developing an AI therapist product. After graduating from Y Combinator, Dearsley and his university classmate Nikhil Gupta found that there was little interest in the therapy product, but demand for their underlying low-latency voice infrastructure was increasing. They decided to pivot and launched the Vapi platform.
Currently, Vapi has handled over 1 billion calls, and usage is accelerating as more companies shift customer interactions to AI systems. Dearsley revealed that Vapi handles between 1 million and 5 million calls per day, with enterprise customers making up the majority.
In addition to Amazon Ring, Vapi's clients include Kavak, Instawork, New York Life, UnityAI, Cherry, and Intuit. Vapi also offers a self-service developer platform, which has been used by over 1 million developers.
Dearsley pointed out that Vapi's success lies in its focus on building infrastructure and orchestration layers, rather than just developing ready-made applications. He said, "Our goal is to make complex models controllable and create value for the world."
Vapi currently has about 100 employees, and this round of funding will be used to expand engineering, infrastructure, and marketing teams to further drive company growth.
