Global retail giant Walmart has recently announced a major organizational restructuring plan. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company is preparing to cut or move approximately 1,000 corporate positions, mainly involving core departments such as technology, products, and artificial intelligence.
Walmart officials stated that this move is aimed at integrating technological resources around the world. By streamlining organizational processes, the company hopes to clarify responsibilities and ensure that existing positions align precisely with the skills needed for future business requirements.
Strategic Focus on AI Acceleration
This organizational adjustment is led by Walmart's newly established Global AI Acceleration Department from last year. The head of this department, along with the Chief Technology Officer, reviewed internal processes and decided to streamline teams to improve overall operational efficiency.
Although the changes affect thousands of employees, Walmart emphasized that this is not "AI replacing human labor," but rather an inevitable choice after organizational alignment. Affected employees are required to move to the headquarters in Arkansas or the Northern California office center, and the company will also assist those unable to relocate in finding internal transfer opportunities.
Technology Transformation of Large Retailers
In recent years, Walmart has been steadily advancing the centralization of its office locations. This initiative of consolidating scattered technology teams into core bases aims to enhance cross-departmental collaboration and respond more quickly to market changes.
Currently, as the largest private employer in the United States, every position adjustment by Walmart stirs industry nerves. In the context where major tech companies worldwide are optimizing costs through layoffs, Walmart's move once again confirms the determination of traditional retail giants to transform into AI-driven enterprises.
