Leading AI startup Anthropic has made it clear that it cannot accept the service terms proposed by the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon). Despite the pressure from the military, Anthropic remains firm, stating that the threats from the other side "will not change our position."
The core of this dispute lies in the usage rights of AI technology. The Pentagon has asked Anthropic to allow the government to use its AI technology "without limitations for all legal purposes." A Pentagon spokesperson considered this request "simple and reasonable," and firmly stated, "We will not let any company set terms for our operational decisions."
However, Anthropic insists that before providing services to the military, a comprehensive security mechanism must be established. In response to statements by the Pentagon's Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael about "substantial concessions" and "providing a seat on an ethics committee," Anthropic still hopes the U.S. side will reconsider more binding security clauses.
