Recently, the renowned tech media The Information reported that OpenAI is actively researching how to integrate advertisements into its AI product ChatGPT. According to insiders, the company is considering displaying sponsored content first when users ask questions related to consumption. For example, when a user asks which mascara works best, they may see recommendations from brands like Sephora. This move aims to provide new marketing opportunities for advertisers while offering users more targeted product information.
At the same time, OpenAI's team is also designing various ad presentation prototypes, exploring how to seamlessly integrate ads into the ChatGPT interface to maintain a smooth user experience and trust. Unlike traditional social media, OpenAI believes ChatGPT has unique advantages, as it can accumulate users' interests and needs through long-term conversations. When users show purchase intent, providing relevant sponsored information will be particularly effective.
In terms of presenting ad content, OpenAI is considering increasing the weight of sponsored information to ensure these contents appear first in users' answers. At the same time, recent design plans also include displaying sponsored content in a sidebar next to the main answer, clearly marked as advertisements. Importantly, OpenAI's internal team agrees that advertising content must not interfere with the user experience, so the display of ads will only occur after the conversation reaches a certain stage to ensure users do not feel disturbed by the ads.
For example, if a user is planning a trip to Barcelona, ChatGPT may naturally recommend visiting Sagrada Familia without any ads. When the user clicks on related links, the system may pop up sponsored information about paid tour providers.
An OpenAI spokesperson stated that while exploring advertising, they will continue to focus on providing users with more powerful intelligent features and respecting the trust established between users and ChatGPT.
