Meta announced on Tuesday a software update (v21) for its Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN smart glasses, introducing two key new features: "Conversation Focus" to enhance hearing clarity in noisy environments, and the "Visual Playlist" feature in collaboration with Spotify.

Practical Features Launch: AI Enhances Clarity of Conversations in Noisy Environments

The most practical feature in this update is **"Conversation Focus"**. This feature uses the AI smart glasses' open-ear speakers and artificial intelligence technology to **amplify the voice of the person speaking**, helping users hear clearly in noisy environments such as busy restaurants, bars, or commutes on trains.

Users can adjust the level of amplification by sliding the right temple of the glasses or entering the device settings, precisely matching the current environment's volume needs. This feature was first introduced at Meta's Connect conference earlier this year and will initially be available on **Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN smart glasses in the United States and Canada**.

 Novelty Feature: Spotify Visual Playlist

The other notable update is a collaboration with Spotify. The smart glasses can now **automatically play matching songs based on the content currently in the user's field of view**.

For example, when you look at an album cover, the glasses can play the artist's song; when you look at a decorated Christmas tree with gifts, it plays holiday music. Meta admits that this feature is more of a "gimmick," but it demonstrates how the company thinks about the potential to connect what users "see" with what they "do" in applications.

  • Market Availability: While "Conversation Focus" is limited to the United States and Canada, the Spotify feature will be available in **more markets** with an English version, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the UAE, the UK, and the US.

Industry Trend: Smart Wearables Assist Hearing

Although the actual effectiveness of "Conversation Focus" still needs further testing, using smart accessories to assist with hearing has become an industry trend. Apple's AirPods have long offered a feature called "Voice Enhancement," designed to help users focus on conversation partners; recently, the AirPods Pro also added support for clinical-grade hearing aid functions.

This software update (v21) will first be available to participants in Meta's Early Experience Program, who need to join a waiting list and get approval before it gradually expands to a broader audience.
