Recently, Hannah Wang, OpenAI's Chief Communications Officer, announced internally that she will leave the company in January of next year. According to a statement from OpenAI spokesperson Kira Wood, Ms. Wang made significant contributions to improving OpenAI's image and communication methods during her time at the company. In a joint statement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Head of Applications Fei-Fei Li said: "Hannah played a key role in shaping public understanding of OpenAI and its work. She has an exceptional ability to express complex concepts in a clear and gentle manner. We are deeply grateful for her leadership and collaboration over the past five years and wish her all the best in the future."

Ms. Wang joined OpenAI in 2021 when the company was still a relatively small research lab. Since her arrival, ChatGPT has rapidly grown into one of the world's largest consumer products. Ms. Wang played a crucial role during the public relations crisis the company experienced in 2023, a period internally referred to as "a brief turbulence." She was appointed Chief Communications Officer in August 2024 and subsequently expanded the company's communications team.

In a draft LinkedIn post shared with WIRED, Ms. Wang mentioned that Lindsay Hurd, OpenAI's Vice President of Communications, will lead the communications team while a new Chief Communications Officer is being sought. Meanwhile, Kate Ruch will be responsible for finding Ms. Wang's successor. In her post, Ms. Wang said: "These years have been very intense and transformative. I am grateful for the opportunity to help tell OpenAI's story, introduce ChatGPT and other amazing products to the world, and share the stories of the team members driving the development of AGI at this critical moment of growth and momentum."

Ms. Wang looks forward to spending more time with her husband and children and reflecting on the next steps in her career.
