Figma's design platform officially launched a new AI image editing feature, supporting one-click deletion/isolation of objects with the lasso tool, automatic background expansion, and lighting/colour adjustments without text prompts. The new toolset will first be deployed in Figma Design and Draw, and will cover the entire platform next year.

Lasso 2.0: One-click Object Removal and Isolation Without Affecting the Background

- Select the target using the lasso tool → click "Remove" to delete directly, or "Isolate" to move it, keeping the background, color, and other properties unchanged

- No text prompt needed, the model automatically fills in pixels, suitable for quick secondary creation of product images and portrait posters

Background Expansion: 1×1 Second to Banner, AI Automatically Completes the Background

- Use case: Expand a square creative into a web banner or mobile poster, the system automatically fills the sides with background and elements

- Technology base: Combines generative models with pixel-level repair to avoid repeated cropping and manual alignment

Prompt-Free Fine-Tuning: One-click Adjustment of Lighting, Shadows, and Color Temperature

- Select an object → adjust lighting, shadows, color temperature, and focus directly from the sidebar, no need for input instructions

- Suitable for quickly adapting brand materials to different media color standards

Toolbar Reorganization: Remove Background Button Takes Center Stage

- All image editing functions are now collected in the left-side toolbar, with "Remove Background" highlighted as the main button

- Figma revealed that removing backgrounds is the most frequently used operation on the platform, and the new design significantly shortens the operation path

Deployment and Competition

- Launch: Starting today, it will be pushed to Figma Design and Draw users, and will cover the entire product line in 2025

- Comparison: Adobe and Canva launched object removal features several years ago; Figma has now filled its gaps and emphasized the differentiated experience of "prompt-free fine-tuning"

- ChatGPT Integration: Figma was one of the first partners for the ChatGPT plugin in October, but it's unclear whether the new features will also be integrated into the OpenAI ecosystem

Next Steps: API Release + Enterprise Batch Processing

Figma revealed that in Q4 2024, it will open the image editing API, allowing enterprise customers to batch call the "object removal + expansion" capabilities; at the same time, it will explore frame-level object removal for short dramas and advertising post-production processes. AIbase will continue to track its API pricing and video function developments.
