Google has recently announced an important update to its AI-powered search feature "AI Mode," aimed at improving the user search experience. This update will add more embedded source links to search results, along with short summaries generated by AI, helping users better understand the relationship between these links and their queries.
In the updated examples presented by Google, when users search for questions such as "How to create a retro home style on a low budget," they will first see a summary. This summary will highlight the main content of the article, such as suggestions for second-hand items, ideas for architectural details (such as replacing lines and hardware), and DIY projects. After the summary, users will see links to relevant websites, which will be displayed in a carousel format for easy browsing.

Google said that in future AI Mode responses, users will also see more words or phrases with hyperlinks, and each link will have an AI-generated explanation to help users understand the importance of these links. This adjustment comes amid increased scrutiny of generative AI search by EU regulators. A few days ago, the European Commission launched an investigation into Google, assessing whether it violated competition rules by using content from online publishers without providing "appropriate compensation."
Additionally, Google noted that when AI-generated summaries appear in search results, users' willingness to click on traditional links may decrease. In response, Google stated that overall click-through rates remain "relatively stable." To address concerns about "draining" website traffic, Google has also started pilot collaborations with several media outlets to explore how AI tools can attract more audiences for news organizations.
Participating publishers include The Guardian, The Washington Post, and The Washington Examiner. One of Google's experiments is adding AI-written overviews to articles on its news platform. Additionally, Google has partnered with agencies like Associated Press to push real-time news to users through the Gemini app. To further enhance the user experience, Google has expanded the "Preferred Sources" feature to global English users, making it easier for them to find their preferred media sources in news and information feeds.
