OpenAI announced that it will complete a $40.5 million donation by the end of the year, covering more than 200 non-profit organizations. This is a major funding plan finalized after its public call for applications in September, and it is also OpenAI Foundation's first major philanthropy project after completing its "public benefit corporation" registration in October this year.

- The application window was only four weeks, yet it received over 3,000 proposals; the final recipients included community media, dance groups, AI literacy workshops, among others, with less than one-third in the technology sector.

- The funds were provided "unconditionally," allowing recipients to use them freely for operations, equipment, or personnel, without any binding requirements for technology purchases.

- The board has committed to allocating another $100 million by 2026, and opening rolling applications, aiming to expand the total philanthropy fund to $2.5 billion within five years.

OpenAI's Chief Philanthropy Officer Lila Ibrahim said: "We want to let grassroots teams embrace AI at their own pace using cash, not API discounts." Industry experts analyze that the unconditional grant model lowers the 'technology access' barrier for community organizations, potentially leading to more localized AI application cases, and also provides a reference for other tech giants in terms of philanthropy strategies.
