OpenAI recently announced that it has invested in a new startup called Red Queen Bio, aiming to prevent artificial intelligence from being maliciously used to develop biological weapons. OpenAI led the company's $15 million seed round. Red Queen Bio was co-founded by Hannu Rajaniemi, and its core mission is to ensure that the artificial intelligence industry can keep pace with potential threats in terms of defensive capabilities.

This investment is part of OpenAI's broader efforts in risk management. Last month, OpenAI also invested in the biotech security software company Valthos. Jason Kwon, OpenAI's Chief Strategy Officer, said that the company will consider supporting more similar startups in the future. He believes that one of the most effective ways to enhance the industry's risk resistance is through technological innovation.
Industry experts point out that while artificial intelligence technology has shown great potential in drug development and vaccine design, it could also be misused by criminals to develop new and more dangerous biological weapons. Red Queen Bio was formed from the split of the mRNA therapy company Helix Nano, which has widely applied artificial intelligence in drug design and collaborated with OpenAI for AI bio-risk testing.
In this transaction, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman and director Nicole Seligman will receive shares in Red Queen Bio, but they did not participate in the specific investment decision. The company's spokesperson stated that OpenAI's Chief Compliance Officer and board members who are not involved in the investment jointly reviewed and approved this investment.
Red Queen Bio will use artificial intelligence models and traditional laboratory methods to identify emerging risks and develop new defense strategies. It is worth noting that the name "Red Queen" comes from Lewis Carroll's famous work "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," symbolizing the rapid advancement of biological capabilities and reminding people that defensive measures must be developed as early as possible. In addition, other investors such as Cerberus Ventures, Fifty Years, and Halcyon Futures also participated in this funding round.
