OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman recently revealed several development plans for the company in an interview with the media, and expressed interest in acquiring Google's Chrome browser, a move that has attracted widespread attention in the tech industry.
In the interview, Altman emphasized the rapid growth of ChatGPT. He stated that currently, ChatGPT has more than 700 million weekly users, which is four times higher than a year ago. API traffic has also doubled within 48 hours, and user numbers continue to break records. Looking ahead, Altman predicted that the user base of ChatGPT will further expand, saying, "Soon, billions of people will use ChatGPT every day." To support this growth, OpenAI plans to invest in a brain-computer interface startup, aiming to compete with Elon Musk's Neuralink. In addition, facing increasing computing power demands, OpenAI expects to invest tens of billions of dollars in the near future to build new data centers to support the company's development.
Regarding the possibility of acquiring Chrome, Altman clearly stated, "If Chrome is really up for sale, we should consider it." Interestingly, several technology companies have already shown strong interest in Chrome. An American AI startup, Perplexity, has made a $3.45 billion acquisition offer to Google, with the company valued at around $1.8 billion; another American AI search engine company, Search.com, also plans to participate in the bidding and has proposed a $3.5 billion acquisition intention. However, the industry generally believes that Google is unlikely to agree to sell Chrome.
It is worth noting that the U.S. Department of Justice is currently conducting an antitrust lawsuit against Google, including multiple proposals to split Chrome, which is one of the key backgrounds for other technology companies' interest in Chrome. When talking about the current industry situation, Altman admitted that there is an "AI bubble" in the market, with investors being overly excited about the artificial intelligence field, but he also reiterated that artificial intelligence remains the most important technological change in recent years.
Altman also discussed corporate governance issues, stating that he may not be suitable for leading a publicly traded company, and even mentioned that he might consider having artificial intelligence manage OpenAI in the next three years.
