In today's highly competitive artificial intelligence (AI) field, the startup Anthropic is rapidly gaining prominence as a magnet for top talent. According to Business Insider, research from SignalFire shows that the ratio of engineers leaving OpenAI to join Anthropic is 8:1, while the exodus from Google’s DeepMind department is even more pronounced, reaching a ratio of 11:1. This trend indicates that not only does Anthropic possess formidable technical capabilities, but its strong emphasis on AI safety also attracts numerous professionals seeking career development.
An analysis suggests that Anthropic’s success in attracting talent stems from its relatively short founding period and immense potential for future growth, coupled with its unwavering stance on AI safety, which sets it apart in the industry. In fact, Anthropic’s team includes key figures who have previously worked at OpenAI and DeepMind, including two co-founders of OpenAI.

SignalFire’s report also notes that Anthropic’s employee retention rate has reached 80%, significantly higher than OpenAI’s 67% and DeepMind’s 78%. This data reflects that, despite the rapid overall development of the AI industry, Anthropic excels in nurturing and retaining talent. As a new company, Anthropic offers more attractive equity incentives, which has prompted many engineers to make the switch.
It is worth noting that some former OpenAI executives left to join Anthropic precisely because of its emphasis on AI safety. For example, Jan Leike, a co-leader of OpenAI’s "Ultra Alignment" team, joined Anthropic in 2024 and expressed his desire to delve deeper into related AI safety research. Additionally, John Schulman, a former co-founder of OpenAI, also briefly joined Anthropic last year before moving to a newly established company.
Meanwhile, Anthropic’s AI assistant, Claude, is gaining increasing influence among developers, sparking interest and prompting more engineers to join. While OpenAI’s ChatGPT has also been widely popular, Anthropic’s early-stage equity incentives, offered as a startup, are undoubtedly more appealing.
