Google is adding a crucial piece to its Google AI subscription that developers care most about. The latest move is that eligible subscribers will receive additional Colab computing units and unlock more powerful GPU, TPU, and other cloud computing resources. In other words, those who write code or run models no longer need to worry about computing power separately.

Public information shows that Colab is a hosted Jupyter Notebook service that requires no installation, allowing users to write Python code and directly access cloud GPUs and TPUs. It has already been the daily tool for many people doing AI experiments, and it is now officially integrated into the Google AI benefits system.

Ultra Tier Gets More Support, No Need to Keep Browser Open for Background Training

The biggest impact is on the Google AI Ultra tier, the highest level. It already offers many benefits: 20TB of cloud storage starting from, up to 20 times the Gemini call quota, and YouTube Premium membership. Now, it adds two tangible capabilities — Premium-level GPU and uninterrupted background execution. The latter is especially important: users don't need to keep browser tabs open all the time, and they can complete long model training tasks, without the task stopping when the webpage is closed.

This is a clear convenience for those working on machine learning. Previously, running long tasks in Colab was scary because if the tab was closed or the network fluctuated, the entire training would be lost. Background execution removes this barrier, making it safer to entrust long-term tasks to the cloud.

Existing Users' Benefits Remain Unchanged, Computing Power Can Be Combined

Google specifically mentioned that this adjustment does not affect existing Colab Pro and Pro+ subscriptions, which will continue to operate as usual. Moreover, users can purchase both — keeping Colab Pro/Pro+ while also subscribing to the Google AI plan. The computing units provided by both sides will be accumulated and will not cancel each other out.

New Colab advanced benefits will be gradually available to Google AI subscription users in markets supporting Colab over the next few weeks. This means that it's not available to everyone today, but rather rolled out in batches by region.
