The US artificial intelligence startup Anthropic has signed its first data center lease in Australia, locking up capacity at a large data center. The facility is planned to have a total capacity of 2.16 gigawatts and is scheduled to start operations in 2027, located on farmland about 250 kilometers from Brisbane.

Following OpenAI, Anthropic has become another AI giant to establish a presence in Oceania. Expanding computing power to Australia is not only about electricity and land, but also about further diversifying the geographical footprint for training and inference. The fact that a capacity of 2.16 gigawatts has been pre-locked indicates that the computing power required by Claude continues to grow, and the farmland in the Southern Hemisphere will soon be lit up with server lights.
