Recently, there has been intense discussion within the artificial intelligence industry regarding the public's resistance to AI technology. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, responded to public doubts raised by investor Gavin Baker, explicitly refuting claims that his portrayal of the future of AI is overly pessimistic.
Previously, Gavin Baker pointed out in public that Amodei's repeated warnings about the potential risks of AI have inadvertently fueled opposition, especially regarding data center construction in the United States. Baker believes that as a leader about to take charge of global core technology companies, Amodei should be more proactive in conveying the positive value of the industry and re-examine his position on regulatory policies.
In response, Amodei clarified on social media, stating that his public discussions on risks and opportunities have always been balanced, and the purpose of writing those articles was to fill the gap in the industry's promotion of future visions. He admitted that the general public's negative attitude toward artificial intelligence is indeed a serious issue that cannot be ignored, but he does not agree that this negative sentiment is directly caused by warnings from industry leaders.
According to Amodei, the root of societal hostility lies not in risk warnings, but in a deep-seated trust crisis. The general public lacks basic trust in companies, governments, and the entire technology industry, constantly worrying that tech giants are pursuing private interests. He stated frankly that the most real criticism facing the industry today is not about marketing rhetoric, but the fact that major AI companies have yet to truly fulfill their grand promises to benefit humanity.
Regarding the debate within the industry about regulatory policies, Amodei further pointed out that regulation does not equate to centralized power. Reasonable industry standards can simultaneously address safety risks, limit monopoly by large corporations, and leave space for open-source models.
