Reddit announced upgrades to its platform infrastructure and community management tools, introducing more advanced AI-driven moderation capabilities. It plans to reduce reliance on traditional mechanisms such as account age and Karma values through an automated abuse prevention system, making it easier for new users to participate in communities.
For a long time, Reddit has used the digital reputation system called Karma to assess the quality of user contributions. Users can gain upvotes and increase their Karma value by posting and commenting with valuable content. This mechanism was initially designed to reduce spam, bot accounts, and malicious activities. However, as more communities began using Karma values and account age as posting requirements, it became increasingly difficult for new users to engage in discussions. Reddit stated that it hopes to rely more on its improved built-in abuse prevention system for moderation, allowing communities to be more open to real users. Although the company has not explicitly mentioned abolishing the Karma system, its importance is expected to gradually decrease.
Meanwhile, Reddit is expanding the testing scope of its AI moderation tool "Rules Hub." This tool uses large language models (LLMs) to understand the intent behind community rules, helping moderators determine whether posts or comments comply with regulations and supporting automatic rule enforcement. The Rules Hub is currently being used in over 700 communities and is expected to be available to all communities later this year.
In addition to AI moderation, Reddit has upgraded several community tools, including a feature that provides users with hints about community rules when they post or comment, as well as a personalized tag function that allows users to set tags visible only in specific communities. Additionally, the company plans to migrate the old desktop site Old Reddit to a new technical architecture, transferring moderator management processes and updating related robot systems.
