A copyright battle that has captured the entire AI industry has finally reached a conclusion with the judge's gavel. According to a report by Jiemian News, on July 20 local time, US Federal Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín in the Northern District of California officially approved a $1.5 billion settlement agreement involving the AI company Anthropic and rejected objections regarding the low compensation amount. The agreement aims to resolve a class-action lawsuit filed by a group of writers—this group had accused Anthropic as early as 2024 of using their works without permission to train its AI chatbot Claude.
The judge's approval marks the end of this landmark confrontation over the ownership of training data copyrights, and also adds a significant precedent for the legal boundaries of AI companies using copyrighted texts as training material.
