Notion has announced that its AI-driven email client, Notion Mail, will be shut down this fall. The productivity tool, launched in April 2025, aimed to create a personalized inbox through AI, will gradually stop service on web, desktop, and iOS platforms, with an operational period of about one and a half years.
According to the official timeline, data export for Notion Mail has been available since June 25. September 21 will be the final deadline for users to save their data, and the service will officially close on September 22, with all unexported data being permanently deleted at that time. Although traditional emails in the inbox will remain in the underlying Gmail, users' drafts, scheduled emails, custom snippets, and automated tags cannot be automatically migrated and need to be manually exported before the deadline.
As a core ecosystem platform focused on notes and task management, Notion also has collaborative tools such as Notion Calendar and Notion Web Clipper. Regarding this strategic adjustment, the official stated that as the capabilities of Notion's AI assistant (Notion agents) continue to improve, users' email handling habits have undergone a fundamental change. Currently, more than half of Notion Mail users can manage their emails through AI agents without even opening their inbox.
Therefore, Notion has decided to fully shift its R&D focus to using AI assistants to reshape the email management process. This move reflects the current evolution trend in the AI application layer market: traditional independent AI single-function clients are gradually losing their advantage, while "AI Agents (intelligent agents)" capable of cross-scenario operations and high automation are becoming the new battleground for tech giants and vertical applications.
