Google DeepMind has recently announced a $75 million investment in the renowned independent film production company A24, with both parties planning to jointly develop AI tools for film production. This collaboration is defined by DeepMind as "industry-first": technology giants and top creators directly collaborate from the project's early stages to create new AI features that empower creators.
A24 is one of the most influential independent production companies in Hollywood in recent years, having produced blockbusters such as "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and "The King's Man." The latest hit film "Backrooms" was also produced by A24. Recently, A24 has also collaborated with well-known actors such as Timothée Chalamet and Anne Hathaway to create multiple film projects. Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, said: "We believe that the best way to build tools that empower creators is to work directly with them. By partnering with industry leaders like A24, we can develop new artificial intelligence features that help creators produce authentic, deep storytelling and fully realize their creative visions."
The Acceleration of AI in Hollywood
Although debates around AI applications in Hollywood have never ceased, A24 is not the first film company to embrace artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, Netflix announced the acquisition of InterPositive, a company founded by Ben Affleck that specializes in developing AI tools for film production. Last year, MGM, owned by Amazon, also established an artificial intelligence department focused on developing various tools for series and film production. From streaming giants to independent studios, from acquisitions to investments, AI is penetrating every link of the film industry supply chain through different paths. This creation revolution driven by technology may redefine the boundaries of "film."
