Peter DeSantis, the head of artificial intelligence at Amazon, revealed in a recent interview that Amazon has started discussions with external companies about selling its self-developed AI-specific chips, Trainium. These chips are currently provided to customers through Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the form of cloud computing, and the move has drawn significant attention from outside.
DeSantis said that AI infrastructure is evolving rapidly, and Amazon continues to explore how to better meet customer needs. He mentioned that Amazon CEO Andy Jassy noted in an early 2024 shareholder letter that demand for Trainium chips in cloud services has increased significantly, and it may even become possible to sell entire batches of chips to third parties.
It is reported that Amazon's latest Trainium3 chip is nearly sold out, while the new Trainium4 chip has attracted widespread attention. DeSantis is not concerned about this, as he believes that selling chips externally will not affect Amazon's AI cloud business, and he pointed out that the AI computing power market still has great growth potential.
Additionally, it is worth noting that Google has begun delivering AI ASIC hardware, intensifying competition in this market and challenging the AI GPU ecosystem dominated by NVIDIA. In this context, Amazon's strategic decision is undoubtedly expected to spark more attention and discussion within the industry.
