Bloomberg reported on June 16 that SpaceX has signed a final merger agreement with Anysphere, the developer of the AI programming tool Cursor. According to the agreement, existing common and preferred shareholders of Cursor will exchange their shares for SpaceX Class A common stock based on Cursor's implied equity valuation of approximately $6 billion. The transaction is completed entirely in stock and does not involve cash payments. It is expected to be finalized in the third quarter of 2026, pending regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions.

Cursor is one of the fastest-growing AI programming products in recent years. It helps developers complete tasks such as code writing, debugging, and optimization through large model-driven natural language programming capabilities. As generative AI rapidly integrates into software development processes, the "Vibe Coding" trend of developing based on chatbot prompts continues to gain momentum. Cursor has become a representative product in this wave and has been widely adopted among developers.

This acquisition is seen as an important step for SpaceX and its founder Elon Musk to strengthen AI software capabilities. Previously, Musk publicly acknowledged that his xAI was lagging behind some competitors in the AI programming tools field and had already begun recruiting relevant engineers from Cursor. By integrating Cursor, SpaceX is expected to gain a mature AI programming product and technical team, further enhancing its competitiveness in the developer tools and AI infrastructure fields.

In the context where AI programming assistants are gradually becoming standard configurations in software development, this deal not only marks a new phase in Cursor's development but also reflects how major tech companies are accelerating their efforts to seize the strategic high ground of developer access points and AI productivity platforms.
