Lee Kun-hee, chairman of South Korea's SK Group, revealed that the group plans to build a new semiconductor factory in Japan, and will also establish an AI factory in collaboration with NVIDIA here, which will be the first AI factory for both companies outside of South Korea.
This AI factory will integrate SK's memory semiconductor technology with NVIDIA GPUs to process large volumes of data, and is planned to create a data center at the gigawatt level. Currently, the team is examining sites with good land and power conditions, and the project aims to be officially put into use within the next 2 to 3 years.
In addition to the factory construction plan, SK Group is actively seeking deep cooperation with Japanese local companies. The group is interested in collaborating with Kioxia in talent development, technology research and development, and the semiconductor ecosystem, and has expressed willingness to work with Rapidus if necessary. At present, it has maintained close communication with semiconductor material and equipment manufacturers such as Tokyo Electron. Lee Kun-hee believes that connecting the South Korean and Japanese semiconductor supply chains has a positive significance for the economic security of both sides.
