The California State University (CSU) has recently reached a major agreement with OpenAI, becoming the largest single-institution ChatGPT application experiment globally. This collaboration, worth $16.9 million, will allow more than 500,000 students and staff within the university system to use "ChatGPTEdu." This move marks the widespread application of AI technology in education, and CSU hopes to become the largest AI-driven public university system in the United States.

In this AI experiment, AI administrators will appear on campus, career centers will use AI to guide students in their job searches, and even at graduation ceremonies, the president will deliver a speech using an AI digital avatar. However, this plan has also sparked strong opposition from faculty members, with some professors worried that AI could replace their jobs and questioning the practical role of AI in education.

Faculty members have signed a joint petition, stating that ChatGPTEdu is no different from the free version of ChatGPT in terms of essential features. They point out that the comprehensive use of AI also involves issues of academic integrity and fair use, and they call for funding to support human resources instead of investing in AI technology. At the same time, the university's financial situation is not optimistic, facing a significant funding gap and pressure to cut staff.

To understand students' and faculty members' views on AI, CSU recently conducted a survey, which showed that 52% of professors believe AI has had a negative impact on their teaching, while 67% of students said no one has taught them how to use AI effectively. In this context, whether CSU's AI program can truly improve the quality of education remains an open question.

Despite the controversy, CSU has decided to continue its new agreement with OpenAI and expand ChatGPTEdu to other universities, including Oxford University and the University of Texas. As education undergoes transformation, schools are exploring ways to find a balance between technology and humanity, ensuring that the core values of education are not overlooked.
