To combat the rampant AI voice and number spoofing fraud, Google recently announced the launch of a major anti-fraud feature called "Fake Call Detection" in its official mobile app "Phone by Google." This feature is specifically designed to identify suspicious calls that use artificial intelligence technology to impersonate contacts in the user's address book, and it clearly labels them on the screen to help users guard against new types of technological fraud.

With the proliferation of AI voice cloning technology, scammers can not only easily forge caller ID numbers but also realistically imitate the voices of victims' friends and family, luring them into transferring money under the pretense of urgent help or account abnormalities. According to data from the FBI, such AI-based scams caused more than $893 million in losses to American citizens in 2025 alone.

End-to-End Encrypted Verification for Fake Numbers

To address this issue, Google's "Fake Call Detection" feature provides an innovative technical solution. When a user receives a call, if it's from a real contact, the caller's device will automatically send a "silent confirmation signal" to the recipient. If a scammer only fakes the number but cannot send the verification signal, the system will immediately trigger an alert.

This detection mechanism is built on the end-to-end encrypted RCS (Rich Communication Service) technology infrastructure. When the system detects an anomaly, it will prominently display a message on the incoming call screen saying "Someone may be impersonating your contact number," and provide a one-click hang-up option, thereby cutting off the fraud chain at the source.

Multiple Smart Updates Launched Simultaneously

It is reported that this feature will automatically activate on devices supporting the Google Phone app, initially rolling out to Pixel phone users with Android 12 and higher versions. In addition to the communication security upgrade, Google has also introduced several practical features for the Android ecosystem in this update, including an upgraded personal safety app for children, Google Photos AI clothing try-on, and broader Apple AirDrop compatibility support.

Through these deep technological updates, Google has demonstrated its determination to fight against the misuse of technology in the AI era. The new "Fake Call Detection" not only builds a solid security defense for users but also sets a new benchmark for future cross-app communication security verification.
