This round of layoffs is not merely a reduction in manpower but a precise "skill adjustment" aimed at technological evolution. General Motors revealed that the company is currently focusing on hiring experts in fields such as AI-native development, data engineering, cloud engineering, agent development, and model engineering. Unlike the previous approach of viewing AI as an auxiliary tool, General Motors' current goal is to achieve full in-house development of AI systems, including the design of underlying architectures, model training, and workflow construction.
In fact, since Sterling Anderson, co-founder of Aurora, took over as Chief Product Officer in May 2025, the software organizational structure of General Motors has experienced significant turbulence. In August 2024, the company cut around 1,000 software employees; in November 2025, three senior executives, including the former Chief AI Officer Barak Turovsky, left collectively. Subsequently, the company quickly filled the technical leadership vacuum by bringing in Behrad Toghi, former head of AI at Apple, and Rashed Haq, former AI head at Cruise.
General Motors' restructuring efforts reflect a common consensus among traditional heavy industries during the period of intelligent transformation: pure softwareization is no longer sufficient to support future competitiveness. By fundamentally reshaping the workforce structure and embedding AI capabilities into autonomous driving, smart cockpits, and production processes, companies are completing a deep transformation from digitalization to intelligentization. This is not just an iteration of skill reserves, but also a redefinition of the future form of enterprise organizations.
