Apple's ambitions in the AI hardware sector are gradually coming into focus. According to renowned tech journalist Mark Gurman, the highly anticipated camera-equipped AirPods have entered the critical final development phase—Design Verification Testing (DVT). This means the product's industrial design and core features are largely finalized, and this headset is likely to become Apple's first true AI wearable device.

Not for Taking Photos: The Camera Becomes Siri's "Eyes"

Contrary to popular belief, the low-resolution camera built into the AirPods is not intended for everyday photography or video recording, but rather to give Siri "visual perception" capabilities. The earbuds resemble the upcoming AirPods Pro 3 in appearance, with a slightly longer stem to accommodate the lens module.

Through these "eyes," Siri will be able to capture and understand the user's environment in real time. For example, when you stand in front of a refrigerator asking, "What dishes can I make with these ingredients?" Siri can directly identify the items and provide suggestions. This experience is similar to having OpenAI's visual analysis capabilities or the iPhone's "Visual Intelligence" right on your ear.

New Forms of Smart Navigation and Life Assistant

Aside from interactive Q&A, Apple is also exploring deep applications of visual AI:

  • Precise Navigation: During walking navigation, the AI can remind users of the exact turn time by recognizing road signs.

  • Proactive Reminders: The system can send real-time recommendations to the wearer based on what it sees (such as roadside notices or objects).

  • Privacy Protection: To ease privacy concerns, the earbuds have a built-in micro LED indicator light that turns on when visual data is uploaded to the cloud to alert the user.

Four Years of R&D, Possibly Launching This September

This product, which has been under development for four years, was repeatedly delayed due to software compatibility issues. Recent developments show that thanks to the collaboration with Google's Gemini, the upgraded Siri is expected to launch as early as September this year. If Apple is satisfied with the quality of visual recognition, this headset may be released alongside the new system.

Notably, this is an important part of Apple's leadership transition. John Ternus, who is about to take over as CEO, has high hopes for this type of product, believing it has the potential to revolutionize the industry, just like the iPhone did. In addition to this AirPods, Apple is also developing AI smart glasses and neck-mounted recording devices, aiming to build a comprehensive AI hardware ecosystem.
