IBM recently announced the integration of support for Google Vertex AI and Intel Gaudi into its Db2 database to enhance AI-based database management capabilities. This update enhances the functionality of Db2 Genius Hub, with IBM claiming that this automated database management system can perform certain routine tasks within a defined set of rules, replacing database administrators (DBAs).

By integrating Db2's data with Google Cloud's fully managed AI platform, Vertex AI, users can more easily build, deploy, and scale machine learning models. In addition, IBM has introduced the AI accelerator Intel Gaudi, aiming to improve cost-effectiveness for large-scale AI deployments.
This update builds on previous support for Amazon Bedrock and IBM watsonx.ai, while also adding support for Microsoft Azure AI Foundry, further advancing automated database operations.
Since its introduction in the 1980s, Db2 has become the preferred choice for many applications requiring large and reliable databases, with bank users accounting for nearly 43% of the market share, including American Express, Bank of America, Citibank, and Deutsche Bank. These institutions are very cautious about system management, yet IBM believes that certain daily tasks can be handled by AI.
The Db2 Genius Hub launched by IBM in March can help companies reduce management costs by 25%, decrease manual intervention by 30%, and shorten problem resolution time by 35%. Although these figures should be treated with caution, IBM states that this update will allow AI to manage clearly defined tasks while keeping human judgment at the core.
Miran Badzak, director of IBM's database software, said in a blog post: "With this update, AI agents in Db2 Genius Hub can propose and execute database operations, which require user approval. This means teams can move more directly from diagnosis to action without giving up control of the production environment."
Industry analyst Sanjeev Mohan noted that the automation of DBAs is accelerating with advancements in generative AI coding. He said, "This is the first step towards proactive monitoring and root cause analysis. AI will gradually be able to offer recommendations and perform tasks autonomously. We hope DBAs can enhance their skills, participate in business decisions, and use Genius Hub to handle tedious database transactions."
In recent years, Db2 has become more modern, and IBM has also partnered with distributed database provider CockroachDB to help modernize critical business applications that rely on mainframe hardware.
Key points:
✅ IBM integrates Google Vertex AI and Intel Gaudi into Db2 to enhance database management capabilities.
✅ Db2 Genius Hub can reduce management costs, manual intervention, and problem resolution time.
✅ AI will take on some database management tasks, allowing DBAs to focus on business decisions.
