Recently, there was a heated debate in the AI circle. Yann LeCun, known as the "father of AI" and who has just left Meta to establish AMI Labs, publicly confronted Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei on the social platform X, directly accusing him of misleading statements regarding "AI causing mass unemployment."
The incident began when Amodei made an extreme prediction during an interview. He claimed that within 1 to 5 years, AI would eliminate 50% of technical positions, junior lawyers, and financial professionals, potentially pushing the unemployment rate up to 20%. This apocalyptic view quickly attracted public attention but also faced sharp rebuttals from LeCun.

When LeCun shared the content, he clearly stated: "Don't believe him, he just wants to sell his AI product." He believed that Amodei lacked basic common sense about the impact of technological revolutions on the labor market. LeCun pointed out that history has repeatedly shown that while technological advances may eliminate some old jobs, they also create more new jobs that were unimaginable at the time. He cited data emphasizing that 60% of today's jobs did not exist 80 years ago. The essence of AI is a tool for improving efficiency, and humans will futurely direct AI as employees in the role of bosses.
Notably, LeCun demonstrated a highly rational side in his response. He frankly stated that neither himself, Sam Altman, nor Dario Amodei are real authorities on employment market issues as technologists. He called on the public to listen to the analysis of professional economists and listed several senior scholars, including Acemoglu, the 2024 Nobel laureate in economics. He emphasized that this is a serious economic issue, not a marketing tactic for tech companies to exploit anxiety for profit.
