Jack Clark, co-founder of Anthropic, confirmed at this week's Semafor Global Economy Summit that AI companies had briefly introduced their new AI model Mythos to the Trump administration. Because of its strong cybersecurity capabilities, the model has not been released to the public yet.
Clark explained at the meeting why Anthropic maintained contact with the US government despite being in opposition. He mentioned that the company sued the Department of Defense in March of this year because the agency had labeled it a supply chain risk. There was a conflict between Anthropic and the Pentagon over whether the military should be allowed to use the company's AI system without restrictions, including mass surveillance of Americans and autonomous weapons. In the end, OpenAI won this contract.

At the meeting, Clark downplayed the impact of the government labeling his business as a supply chain risk, calling it only a "narrow contract dispute," and said that Anthropic hopes this dispute will not affect its focus on national security. He stated, "Our position is that the government must understand these technologies, and we must find new ways for the government and the private sector to work together to develop truly revolutionary technologies for the economy, while also involving important issues such as national security."
Clark's confirmation also echoed last week's reports that officials from the Trump administration were encouraging some major banks to test Mythos, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citibank, Bank of America, and Morgan Stanley.
In an interview, Clark also discussed the impact of AI on society, including issues such as unemployment and higher education. Previously, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, had warned that advances in AI could lead to unemployment rates similar to those during the Great Depression, but Clark disagreed. He pointed out that the company has only observed "early signs of potential weakness in graduate employment" in certain industries and said that Anthropic is prepared to deal with any significant changes in employment that may arise.
When asked what majors students should choose, Clark suggested selecting those that integrate multiple disciplines and encourage analytical thinking. He said, "AI allows us to access experts from different fields, but more importantly, it's about knowing how to ask the right questions and the interesting insights that can emerge when different disciplines intersect."
Key Points:
🌟 Anthropic introduced its new AI model Mythos to the Trump administration, which has not been released to the public due to its strong cybersecurity capabilities.
⚔️ The contract dispute between Anthropic and the Department of Defense did not affect its focus on national security, and it still hopes to maintain cooperation with the government.
🎓 Clark advises college students to choose majors that integrate multiple disciplines to cope with future challenges brought by AI.
