On April 14, Stanford University officially released the "AI Index Report 2026." The report reveals a milestone situation: AI technology globally has entered a comprehensive period of popularization, and the gap in top-tier technical capabilities between China and the United States has reached its lowest level in history.

China vs. the US: From "One Leading Alone" to "Alternating Leadership"

The report points out that although the US maintains its lead in top model output and high-impact patents, with 5,427 data centers (more than ten times the total of all other countries combined), China has surpassed in several key indicators.

  • Chinese Advantages: China ranks first globally in the number of AI research papers published, citations of these papers, total patent output, and the installation of industrial robots.

  • Performance Catch-up: As of March 2026, the US's top models are only ahead of Chinese models represented by DeepSeek by 2.7%. The report believes that the technological gap between the two sides has been "basically eliminated," and the performance of top models is showing an alternating leadership pattern.

Industry Landscape: Academia Retreating, Tech Giants Taking Control

The leadership in AI development has completely shifted from academia to the industry. In 2025, over 90% of top models were produced by the industry, with OpenAI, Google, and Alibaba as core contributors, while academic institutions' contribution rate has dropped to 1%.

Adoption Speed: Faster Than PCs and the Internet

The penetration speed of AI technology is breaking historical records. In the past three years:

  • Social Penetration: The adoption rate of generative AI reached 53%, surpassing the speed of personal computers and the internet in their early days.

  • Enterprises and Campuses: AI adoption in enterprises soared to 88%; in education, more than 80% of college students have integrated generative AI into their daily studies.
