E-commerce giant Amazon has recently completed the acquisition of Rivr, a Zurich-based autonomous robotics startup. This move marks a crucial step for Amazon in tackling the "last mile" of logistics, particularly in automated delivery services within complex urban environments.
Core Technology: The Skateboard-Wearing "Quadruped"
Rivr's core product is a unique quadrupedal wheeled robot. Co-founder and CEO Marko Bjelonic once vividly described it as a "dog wearing roller skates". Unlike traditional wheeled delivery robots, Rivr's design combines the efficient mobility of wheels with the terrain adaptability of quadrupedal robots, allowing it to autonomously climb stairs and overcome curbs, delivering packages directly to customers' doorsteps.

Strategic Layout Behind the Deal
Capital Front: Amazon has had a long-standing interest in Rivr. In 2024, the Amazon Industrial Innovation Fund and Bezos Expeditions participated in the company's seed round.
Valuation and Funding: Before this acquisition, Rivr had raised a total of $25 million, with its valuation reaching up to $100 million.
Vision Acceleration: Bjelonic stated on LinkedIn that this acquisition will accelerate the company's vision of building a "general-purpose physical AI", using Amazon's resources to bring robotic technology to large-scale practical deployment.
Commercialization Process
Rivr had previously launched a pilot project with the package delivery company Veho in Austin and had planned to scale its robot fleet to 100 units by 2026. Although the terms of the current deal have not been disclosed, after being acquired by Amazon, Rivr's technology will be deeply integrated into Amazon's global logistics network, addressing the most challenging physical obstacles in home delivery services.
