Microsoft recently announced a new AI system called Copilot Tasks, designed to help users completely eliminate tedious administrative work through background automation. Unlike traditional AI assistants, Copilot Tasks runs on its own cloud-based computer and browser, meaning it can handle tasks for you without using local device resources, while allowing you to focus on other activities.
The core of Copilot Tasks lies in its "agent" capabilities. Users can simply give instructions in natural language, and it can handle various complex cross-application tasks. For example, it can scan your inbox, convert emails, attachments, and images into a presentation (PPT) with one click; or filter urgent emails and draft responses for you. Additionally, it can handle daily chores, such as creating a birthday party plan based on your request, managing and canceling infrequently used subscription services, and even automatically selecting new rental apartment listings every Friday and scheduling viewings.
Microsoft emphasized that when it comes to "critical operations," such as paying bills or sending formal messages, Copilot Tasks will proactively seek user approval rather than acting on its own. The release of this product is seen as a positive response from Microsoft to existing AI agent tools in the market, such as Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Agent Mode.
Currently, Copilot Tasks is in the research preview phase and is only available to a small group of testers. As the technology matures, this tool, which can "think and operate a computer independently," is expected to become the most transformative productivity add-in in the Office suite.
Summary:
🖥️ Runs independently in the cloud: Copilot Tasks uses a cloud-based virtual computer to perform tasks, not using user's local system resources, and supports silent background operations.
📋 Automates across applications: It has strong long-process handling capabilities, supporting a series of complex tasks from email organization to PPT generation, from rental apartment selection to subscription management.
🔒 Security confirmation mechanism: Before performing high-sensitivity tasks such as payments or sending messages, the AI will require manual authorization to ensure the operation process is safe and controlled.
